Why Am I Seeing Negative or Decreasing Water Meter Values?

In rare cases, you may notice that meter readings appear to decrease, which can be confusing or problematic for systems that expect strictly increasing values.

Common Causes

  • Physical Meter Replacement: If a water meter is physically replaced, the new device might start from a lower reading or reset to zero.

  • Obstruction or External Interference: An insect or object temporarily blocking the view of the digits can cause misreads.

  • Temporary Sensor Errors: Unusual lighting, condensation, or mechanical wear can cause a single misread or incorrect image interpretation.

How We Handle It

These rare anomalies are detected by Smartvatten’s internal validation system. When recalculations are made, corrected historical values become available through our API using the query[updatedafter] parameter.
